Ahead of its world premiere at TIFF, 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback, produced by Blackfella Films in Australia and distributed by Banijay Entertainment’s All3Media International, has been picked up by Netflix for an international rollout.
Commissioned by SBS and NITV, 2.6 Seconds: Death in the Outback is the only documentary being featured among the ten Primetime program selections at TIFF. Directed by Darren Dale, it explores the events leading up to the police shooting of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker, and the subsequent reckoning in Australia about justice, policing and race.
Dale commented, “2.6 Seconds is a shocking story about the collision of race and power that is uniquely Australian but one I’ve always believed also has global resonance. Netflix coming on board ahead of our TIFF premiere is confirmation of that belief, and I cannot wait to see how international audiences respond to this powerful series.”
Amanda Duthie, content director at Netflix ANZ, added, “Some stories stay with you long after the screening, and 2.6 Seconds is one of those. Netflix is honored to bring this deeply moving Australian documentary to Netflix audiences around the world, giving a powerful and important story the opportunity to resonate far beyond our shores.”
Produced by Blackfella Films in association with PAW Media, it received major production investment from Screen Australia’s First Nations Department in association with SBS and was financed with support from Screen NSW.
