An untitled documentary from Travon Free about the New York Knicks winning their first championship in 50-plus years is being jointly financed by Blink49 Creator Studios and Scott Budnick’s 1Community.
The doc is being produced by Free through his company The Unreasnble in partnership with Outerboro Films. It aims to deliver a ground-level view of fans and communities that have long been loyal to the team over a 36-hour period.
“This is a story about resilience, passion and the undying hope of everyday New Yorkers—the bodega owner, the doorman, the cab driver, die-hard Knicks fans who know the joys and pains of loving and belonging to one of the greatest cities on Earth,” said Free. “It’s a love letter to the woman who’s gone to Knicks games with her mom since she was five and the old man on that Brooklyn stoop still talks about the time he saw Willis Reed play on one leg. It’s all so much bigger than basketball.”
“Blink49 was built to back creators telling stories that matter, and this is exactly that; a piece of New York history captured as it happens,” said Mickey Meyer, president of Blink49 Creator Studios. “Partnering with Outerboro and 1Community to move at the speed this moment demands is what independent filmmaking should look like.”
Budnick, founder and CEO of 1Community, added, “The Knicks grabbed the attention of the nation at a time when we truly needed something joyous to rally around. This project is a testament to and a love letter for the people of New York City and all die-hard fans who never let hope die and showed the world the tremendous power of coming together.”
