Channel 4 is set to air a documentary about the tragic death of British teenager Molly Russell and the impact of social media on mental health.
Molly Vs THE MACHINES tells the story of Molly’s father, Ian, and his fight for online safety in the aftermath of her death. It is produced by Marc Silver together with Kat Mansoor for Snowstorm Productions and Natalie Humphreys for Storyboard Studios.
Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff (author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power) co-wrote the film, which is directed by Silver. It was commissioned for Channel 4 by Sacha Mirzoeff, senior commissioning editor for factual entertainment and documentaries, and funded with support from Channel 4, Luminate, Screen Scotland, Empathy AI, Placeholder Films, The Filmmaker Fund, Doc Society, and Ford Foundation JustFilms.
The documentary is launching as part of the Glasgow Film Festival’s premiere slate, with simultaneous releases in 30-plus cinemas for a one-night-only theatrical event.
