NHK has completed production on its documentary following the construction of Sagrada Família’s central tower, the “Tower of Jesus”.
The completion of the “Tower of Jesus” was unveiled on the 100th anniversary of Antoni Gaudi’s death. The construction of Sagrada Família’s central tower was documented in the special, which is being released in Japan on June 28, with an international version to follow.
The Japanese public broadcaster was granted permission to film on the site in 2010 and has been documenting the construction ever since. NHK was granted exclusive filming access for the completion of the final “Tower of Jesus.” The team used a range of methods to document the scale of the project, developing an 8K × 8K camera, enabling the cathedral to be filmed in extraordinary detail from previously unseen vantage points.
Masumi Hoshino, NHK’s executive producer of the project, said, “Being the only broadcaster in the world granted permission to film the construction of the Tower of Jesus was a tremendous honor, but at the same time, we felt an immeasurable sense of responsibility. The entire crew approached the project with the determination to convey—accurately, beautifully, and with a strong sense of immediacy—a significant chapter in the basilica’s 144-year history.”
