New data from the European Audiovisual Observatory has found that American content dominates content slates available in on-demand catalogs (across transactional, free, and subscription) in Europe.
Film and TV content in TVOD, SVOD and FOD catalogues—2025 edition, authored by analyst Christian Grece, demonstrates the stark contrast between the diversity of individual titles available and their actual presence across streaming and VOD catalogs in the EU. It explored 187 TVOD catalogs, 837 SVOD catalogs, and 182 FOD catalogs in 25 EU countries for film lineups; and 146 TVOD catalogs, 425 SVOD catalogs, and 75 FOD catalogs for TV slates, based on JustWatch data. There were 2.5 million works present on the on-demand catalogs in the 27 EU markets.
European works accounted for 46% of all individual titles in exploitation but just 32% of total “presences” (the actual number of times a work appears across various catalogs). American-originated titles represented 33% of individual titles but commanded nearly half of the presence in VOD catalogs, with a 48% share. U.S. titles are typically featured in far more catalogs per title than their European counterparts, the Observatory says.
The study also indicates that 69% of EU27 works found in catalogs are “non-national,” as in produced in another EU27 country. It also pointed to film’s dominance in catalogs, and the EU’s higher share of film lineups than TV seasons.
SVOD catalogs were the most diverse, with 29% of their lineups from outside the U.S. and Europe (which accounted for 23% of presences), while TVOD was dominated by American content. FOD leads when it comes to European and EU27 works, with EU27 works reaching a 25% share of presence.
France has the highest share of EU works on slates, followed by Germany, Italy, and Spain.
