In a deal with World Events Productions (WEP), CAKE has secured the international distribution rights to the animated series in the iconic Voltron franchise.
The deal grants CAKE the rights to sell a library of 280 episodes across multiple series. The brand originated from the Japanese anime Beast King GoLion and was first adapted by WEP in 1984 with Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The slate CAKE is taking on includes Voltron: Golion, Voltron: Dairugger XV, Voltron: The Third Dimension in CGI, and the 2011 follow-up series Voltron Force, which aired on Nicktoons. Traction around the franchise remains strong, with 73 million social media mentions in 2025 alone. Next spring, Amazon MGM Studios will release a live-action movie starring Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, Danniel Quinn-Toye, Rita Ora, and Samson Kayo, with Hasbro on board as toy partner.
CAKE CEO Ed Galton, a childhood fan of the brand, commented, “I can still remember watching it as a kid, those lions forming together into something unstoppable. The fact that it’s still generating this kind of passion and cultural conversation 40 years on tells you everything about the strength of this franchise. In a world where anime has never been more mainstream, Voltron was there at the beginning, and that heritage matters. We’re proud to be bringing this catalog to a new generation of fans around the world.”
Bob Koplar, CEO at WEP, added, “Voltron has captivated audiences around the world for four decades, and I’m thrilled to partner with CAKE to bring the classic show to international broadcasters and platforms. CAKE’s relationships across the kids’ and family space are second to none, and we couldn’t ask for a better partner to introduce Voltron to a new generation of fans globally—especially with the Amazon live-action feature on the horizon.”
