The Disney Channel original movie franchise Zombies will return for a fifth installment, with filming commencing this spring in New Zealand.
The as-yet-untitled film, which will see the return of Malachi Barton and Freya Skye, follows the events of Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires. Paul Hoen returns as director and EP of the franchise. The film will stream on Disney+ and air on Disney Channel.
“Zombies has become a defining franchise for the current generation,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “With each movie, we intentionally push the story somewhere new. Introducing mermaids in Zombies 5 opens up a completely different dynamic, while staying true to the music, characters, and themes of unity and acceptance that are at the heart of these films.”
The first three films garnered 385 million-hours watched across linear and streaming in the U.S. Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires drew 9.3 million views globally in its first nine days streaming, amassing 43 million views in under six months.
The franchise also includes Zombies: The Re-Animated Series and the recently unveiled short-form vertical series Locker Diaries: Zombies.
