Gracenote’s latest SVOD data drop—which now includes HBO Max—has found that sports is the fastest-growing category on global SVOD services, accounting for 5% of overall slates.
The division of Nielsen has released its Q2 data on the performance of Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, Netflix, Paramount+, and the new addition, HBO Max.
Sports content, as we’ve seen, has grown tremendously on the streamers over the last few years. In November 2024, sports made up just 1.4% of the Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, Netflix, and Paramount+ catalogs; that number now stands at 3.3%. With HBO Max included, sports rises to 5% of all content. By the numbers: there are now nearly 38,500 sports shows, episodes, sports games, and events on the leading global SVOD services.
HBO Max offers the most sports content among major global streamers tracked by the Gracenote Data Hub. The platform accounts for 35% of available sports. At the individual game and event level, HBO Max offers 42% of sports content. Prime Video is ranked second with a 25% share, Netflix is at 16%, and Disney+ is at 14%. At the individual game and event level, Paramount+ follows HBO Max at 30% of games, events, and sports show episodes. With the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, the combined platform would be a dominant force in sports streaming.
The Gracenote Data Hub also charts FAST movements, with the number of channels up 19% year-on-year. Entertainment, sports, news, and reality dominate. News showed the most gains, with channels up 57% year on year. Live is becoming more popular in FAST, thanks to sports, accounting for 37% of content on sports FAST channels.
