TBS Holdings has picked up a minority stake in Legendary Entertainment for $150 million and clinched a strategic partnership with the independent studio.
TBS and Legendary will collaborate on original Japan IP, building up the U.S. studio’s experience with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Drops of God, Street Fighter and GUNDAM. The deal between the two companies to develop IP is not exclusive.
Yayoi Nakatani, director & CGO (growth strategy) at TBS Holdings, noted, “We are delighted to welcome Legendary, a world-class content studio and creator of many historic hits, as a partner. Their overwhelming creativity and ability to build global blockbusters are invaluable to our overseas strategy. Centered around our overseas strategy studio THE SEVEN and THE SEVEN US—which received a capital increase of approximately 28 billion yen last year—we will co-develop and produce content for the global market using the power of TBS Group creators.”
Josh Grode, CEO of Legendary Entertainment, noted, “TBS has played a central role for decades, collaborating with every member of the Japanese creative ecosystem, from publishers to animators, writers, and artists. TBS’s position in the Japanese market brings exciting opportunities for collaboration. We look forward to deepening our relationship in Japan and helping bring rich IP to people worldwide while maintaining respect and admiration for talented creators.”
