Netflix’s content slate in the Philippines this year marks a “new chapter” as the streamer celebrates ten years in the Southeast Asian country.
Last year, more than 90% of subs in the country watched local content, Netflix says, with Doll House, Lolo and the Kid, Outside, and Kontrabida Academy among the platform’s successes. To date, 32 Filipino titles have charted on its global top-ten lists.
The local investment goes beyond originals, with partnerships with ABS-CBN and GMA. This year, the platform will deliver five originals (three series and two films) in what it is calling “a major jump that pushes genre, scale, and imagination while staying rooted in the Filipino heart.”
The lineup includes BuyBust: The Undesirables, reimagining the events after the 2018 film; Balaraw, a horror-mystery series from director Rae Red; 18th Rose, a YA romance film; the family drama Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon and the holiday-themed Paskong Pinoy.
Continuing its partnership with local giants, Netflix will feature two series before their FTA launches: GMA’s Master Cutter and ABS-CBN’s Someone, Someday.
“We are excited to continue growing alongside the industry, strengthening partnerships, and supporting more ambitious ideas from script to screen,” said Vitto Lazatin, Netflix’s content lead for the Philippines and director of content licensing for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. “We continue to bring Filipino stories to the global stage, working with a wide range of creators to showcase the breadth, ambition, and diversity of Filipino storytelling. We are confident viewers will enjoy the varied stories coming to their screens this year, and the many more we look forward to bringing their way.”
