The SwitchScreen: Philipp Rotermund on Building wedotv into an AVOD Powerhouse

As we continue our The SwitchScreen strand ahead of IBC, ScreenMDM Talks welcomes Philipp Rotermund, co-founder and co-CEO of wedotv, to discuss the AVOD platform’s expanding global reach, ad-tech innovations, content rights negotiations, and priorities for the months ahead.

It’s been a busy few months for wedotv, the AVOD platform and streaming channels provider launched by Rotermund and fellow co-founder and co-CEO Chris Sharp in 2018, well before SVOD consumer fatigue had set in. The platform recently renewed and expanded its alliance with the VIDAA smart TV platform into South Africa and MENA, cracked the Indian market with the launch of four channels on Samsung TV Plus, expanded its European reach with TiVo Channels, and struck a deal with 3 Screen Solutions (3SS) to bring content into in-car entertainment systems.

Our podcast with Rotermund, available on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts, covered a lot of ground, including wedotv’s emerging markets expansion, CPM challenges, ad-tech innovations, and data disparities depending on the distribution partner (TV OS systems, telcos, pay-TV providers, BVOD). Rotermund also weighed in on new opportunities for contextual targeting and personalization, non-traditional CTV advertising spots, shoppable TV, and the fast-growing free sports streaming space.

The conversation also covered the evolving relationship with content distributors from the early days of “A What?” when talking to rights owners about AVOD deals to linear rights differentiation and the rising prominence of TV OS systems as the gatekeepers to the living room.

Looking ahead, Rotermund said key priorities include deploying a full 360-degree approach that leverages social media platforms, exploring opportunities to bring content creators into the wedotv ecosystem, and tapping into the mobile-first trend.
