Ahead of its premiere at TIFF, Blindspot Berlin, a six-part drama from NEUESUPER about the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, has been picked up for international distribution by Beta Film.
A co-production with ARD Degeto, rbb, NDR and HR, the series is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13 as part of the Primetime section showcasing TV series from around the world. David Nawrath directs and co-creates and co-writes with David Marian. The cast includes Albrecht Schuch, Tamer Trasoglu, and Bayan Layla.
“When we started developing this series, we faced a question that stayed with us throughout the entire process: How do you tell a story rooted in a real event, one whose social, political, and personal dimensions are still being felt today—without oversimplifying, without speculating, and without losing sight of those who were directly affected?” said Simon Amberger, producer at NEUESUPER. “Years of research, conversations with investigators, lawyers, and survivors all pointed to the same thing: There are gaps in what we know about the events leading up to December 19, 2016 that have never been closed. We can’t fill those gaps. But we can, based on everything we’ve learned, offer a serious and considered hypothesis about how things unfolded and why they went wrong. That felt like a responsibility worth taking on. And it took a team that was genuinely willing to go there.”

Blindspot Berlin launches on ARD mediathek on October 30 and will air on Das Erste on November 1 and November 6.
