Modern-day adaptations of Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, and Jane Eyre, produced with vertical short-form and horizontal feature versions, are part of the inaugural slate at new L.A.-based studio LoveHit, which has also launched its own microdrama app.
LoveHit launched this month with its literary canon slate. Each is filmed, written, shot, and edited as a vertical series and a horizontal feature. The vertical videos will roll out on its own U.S. app, while the 16:9 features will be made available to TV and streaming buyers worldwide, beginning at MIPCOM.
The company is leaning into public domain classics with present-day settings. In addition to Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, and Jane Eyre, it is working on The Great Gatsby and Beauty and the Beast. Each will be available as 90-minute TV movies and 50×1- to 3-minute vertical video series.
The studio also has in post-production Dangerous Liaisons, The Scarlet Letter, and Les Misérables.
“There isn’t a market in the world where these titles need much of an introduction,” said Lenny Levi, CEO of LoveHit. “Every generation has adapted them, and every generation finds its own reason to connect with them. That’s what makes them evergreen. We framed everything for both formats and cut two versions: the vertical version is made specifically for mobile devices and has its own way of telling the story, while the horizontal version goes to Cannes, where we’re already seeing interest in romance from television and streaming buyers around the world. I’m especially proud that we shot all of it in Los Angeles, using local casts and crews.”
