RTL Deutschland & German Screenwriters Association Clinch Remuneration Agreement

RTL Deutschland and Deutscher Drehbuchverband (DDV), representing the interests of German screenwriters, have agreed to terms regarding compensation for scripted prime-time productions, including a cut of distribution revenues for both finished sales and formats.

The deal follows two years of negotiations and marks the creation of the first formal joint remuneration framework between the two parties. Initial talks date back to 2016.

One framework applies to scripted content on RTL and VOX—first broadcasts and reruns—from 2010 to 2021. Compensation entitlements are triggered whenever a production reaches predefined audience reach thresholds. The second framework governs productions from 2022 onwards and introduces a minimum remuneration guarantee for new productions.

Both frameworks grant screenwriters a share of commercial distribution revenues for both tape sales and formats.

Andreas Fischer, COO at RTL Deutschland, stated, “Fair compensation for the success of screenwriters’ creative achievements is important to us. We are pleased that these constructive discussions have resulted in two final agreements.”

Marcus Seibert and Christian Lex, DDV board members and lead negotiators, added, “This agreement finally clears the way for screenwriters to share in the success of RTL Group’s fictional productions. The negotiations were marked by a willingness to compromise on both sides. The new rules for minimum compensation are particularly gratifying, especially given the current economic instability.”

The Deutscher Drehbuchverband (DDV) has more than 750 members.
